Edward T Doyal and Sarah Ann Howard Doyal

Edward T Doyal was born in 20 Dec 1816 in Kentucky and passes 15 Aug 1892. He is the son of Revolutionary Soldier John Dyal.   He is married to Sarah Ann Howard born 17 Oct 1817 and died 20 Dec 1891,  in the 1850 Census and they have a  John Doyal age 2 in the household.  Also counted in the household is a Nicholas Ayles age 14.  Their residence is that of Brown Township, Hendricks County, Indiana.
John list his occupation as farmer in the 1860 Census.  Edward, Sarah and John have been joined in the family by Lucinda age 8 and James B Doyal age 3.  They are all living in Brown Township in Hendricks County.
In the 1870 Census the family grows with the addition of  Susanna age 7 and a baby sister Rebecca age 1.  But Lucinda is not on the census with the family.   Their farm is valued at 1600 dollars and they have 2000 dollars in personal property.
In the 1880 Census the household consist of Edward T. age 66, Sarah A. age 60., John T age 29,  James B. age 22 and Susanna Louisiana age 16.    Rebecca who would only be 9 is not on the census. I have made a note that she could be one of the buried/missing burials in Howards
The 1880 Census is the last Census that both Edward and Sarah are counted on as the both pass with in a year of each other Sarah dying  20 Dec 1891  and Edward passes 15 Aug 1892.  They share a grave marker.  The marker is grey limestone in an obelisk shape.

John T Doyal 15 Jul 1848 dies 1 Feb 1900 and is also buried in Howards.

The Doyal name was found spelled as also Doyle

Note on research   the father of Edward T Doyal was provided by Deron Entler a Doyal Family Genealogist.  He also provided the middle and maiden name as Sarah Ann Howard.  He verified that John W Doyal was the brother of Edward T. Doyal

Crane Family Conclusions

The Crane's buried in Howards Cemetery have all been accounted for except Alfred P. Crane b. in 1865 and died in 1868.   I have found no record of who's son he was.  As he is buried in Howards and so is the James M Crane family, he could be the Crane's son; but this is just supposition.  If we uncover Alfred's parentage it will be posted here.

Sarah A. Crane

Sarah A. Crane was born 1878 and died in 1917; she was the daughter of James M. Crane and Elizabeth Cox.  She is counted in the 1880 Census living with her parents and sisters.  She is united in marriage to Emory T Green on 20 Oct 1895 in Boone County Indiana.
In the 1900 Census Emory T is age 27, Sarah A. is age 21 and two children daughter Esta age 3 and Frank age  1.  Emory(Emery) is a farmer.
In the 1910 Census Emory, Sarah, Esta, and Frank are joined by more children Ora M is age 9, Opal A is age 7, Mina is age 4, Edward is age 2 and Morris E is 10mos.  This is the last Census that Sarah A. Crane will be counted in, as she passes in 1917.  Emory is a Farmer
In the 1920 Census the household consist of Emory, Edward, Frank, Ora M., Opal A., Mina, Morris E., Ray T. Green age 8 and Harold E. Green age 5; these two boys were born prior to Sarah's death.  Emory is a building Carpenter.
In the 1930 Census the household contains Emory, Mina, Edward, Morris E., Ray T., Harold., and a Marion C. Green who is age 6.(Unknown at this time the parents of Marion)    Emory is a House Carpenter.
Emory T Green lives on until 1958, and then is buried with his wife in Howards Cemetery where they share a tombstone.

Almira "Myra" E Crane

Almira E. Crane is born in May 1870 in Indiana, and she passes passes in 1933.  She was the daughter of James M. Crane and Elizabeth Cox.  Until her marriage she is counted in her parents house hold.  She marries Lucian Funkhouser 11 May 1890.  Lucian born 1867 was the son of Joseph Funkhouser and Nancy King(More on the Funkhousers in another sketch)
The couple set up housekeeping in Brown Township, Hendricks, Indiana and are counted in the 1900 Census.  Lucian is a farmer and age 32, Almira "Myra" is age 30, daughter Hazel G. is age 7, Sallie A., is age 5 and Mary E. is age 2.
The family is again counted in the 1910 Census living in the same township, with an addition of two boys Loyal age 9 and Harry age 6, to their growing family.
In the 1920 Census Lucian, Myra, Hazel G., Mary E., Loyal S., Harry K., Herschel Grant age 5, are counted in the household a children of the Funkhousers.  Also in the household is Harold W. Herring the three year old son of Sallie A. Funkhouser and her husband Carl Herring.  Sallie had passed in 1917 and is buried next to her daughter Margaret who passed in 1914.
In the 1930 Census the household consist of Lucian, Almira, Herschel Grant and the grandson Harold Herring. Lucian is still farming in 1930.  This is the last Census both Lucian and Almira will be counted in as Lucian passes in 1936 and Almira passes in 1933, they share a tombstone in Howards Cemetery

Lorinda Rebecca Crane and Pleasant Jasper Lowder

Lorinda R. Crane was born in Indiana Sep of 1862 and passed away in 1914.  She was the daughter of James M Crane and Elizabeth Cox. She is again counted in the 1880 Census living at home with her parents and sisters.
On 12 Feb 1882 in Boone County, Indiana she marries Pleasant Jasper Lowder born 1859 and dies in 1941; he was the son of James and Sarah Lowder.   Lorinda and Jasper set up housekeeping in Indianapolis, Marion County Indiana and are counted in 1910 Census. Jasper's occupation is Motorman.  In the Census they have two children a daughter Nora born in Jul 1883 and a son Adolphus born in Sep 1893.
In the 1910 Census the family is living in Perry Township Boone County. Pleasant Jasper's occupation has changed to farmer.  The household is made up of Pleasant, Lorinda, Nora and Adolphus.  This will be the last Census that Lorinda R. is counted in as she passes in 1914.

They have set up housekeeping in Perry Township, Boone County Indiana in the 1870 Census; and have two daughters recorded in the census Lorinda R. Crane born Sep 1862 and Almira E. Crane born May 1870.
The family is again counted in Perry Township in the 1880 Census with the addition of a daughter Sarah A. Crane 1878.  This is the last Census with the daughters living at home. (More about the daughters in their individual sketches)
James and Elizabeth are counted again in the 1900 Census living in Perry Township, and again in 1910 Census; but living in Eagle Township, Boone County Indiana; James is a retired farmer at this time. The are living on Academy St. in Zionsville, Indiana.

Conclusion of Carters

A determination can not be made if Jeremiah Carter and Leonard Carter the two patriarchs of these families are related.  They are both born in Kentucky and they are also neighbors.  If any information is found to link these two families it will be posted here.   The Carter burial have all be account for at present.

Plans have been made to try and find the earliest walking of the cemetery, to find if any individuals have faded from the currently known records.

John T Carter, Mary J Keeney Carter and Lushous Carter

John T Carter son of Leonard(Lenard) Carter born 1855 in Indiana and passed away 16 Sep 1887.  He married Mary J Keeney the 22 Jul 1877.  Mary J. Keeney is born in Indiana in 1857 and passes 18 Jul 1888. Leonard occupation in the 1880 Census is that of a farmer.  This is the only Census that the young couple is counted in, as both of them pass by 1888.  They also have lost a son in 1885, his name was Lushous Carter and he passed 14 Aug 1885.  His tombstone identifies his parents, and the inscription is on the same obelisk as his parents.
The inscription gives no birth date or age of Lushous, but he is not listed in the 1880 Census.  So it is surmised that he was born between 1880 and 1885.
The shared stone is a grey obelisk.

Ora Carter

Ora Carter born 9 May 1874 and passed  10 Dec 1907 is also buried in Howards Cemetery.  Ora married Laura E Tout on 21 Mar 1894. She was the daughter of Basil Tout and Eliza Bright.

Ora Carter was the son of Leonard(Lenard) Carter and Martha A Stuart

Leonard Carter and Martha A. Stuart Carter

Leonard (Lenard) Carter was born in Kentucky 18 May 1822 and passed away in Hendricks County Indiana 4 May 1916.  He was united in marriage to a Martha A. Stuart(maiden name found on sons Ora's Marriage Index) born 12 Dec 1830 in Kentucky and passed away 20 Sep 1892 in Indiana.  The family immigrated to Indiana between 1852 and 1855, as their son John T Carter was born in Indiana in 1855 he died 16 Sep 1887.  Prior to that they had daughter Margaret born in 1852 in Kentucky.   The family is first counted as living in Indiana in the  1860 Census living in Perry, Boone, Indiana. (Research Note they are living next door to the Jeremiah Carter Family)  The household consists of Leonard age 37 , Martha age 28, James D age 12, Catherine age 10, Margaret age 8, John T age 5, Elvessie age 3, Alice A. age 1 The family is  counted in the 1870 Census living in Brown, Hendricks, Indiana.  The household consisted of Lenard age 48, Martha age 40, James age 22, Margaret age 18, John 15, Silvester age 12(researcher note believe Elvessia and the identified Silvester are the same person, despite the spelling difference), Alice age 11, Elizabeth age 8, Clara age 6, Thomas age 3 and Victoria age 3 mos.  They are then counted in the 1880 Census Lenard, Martha, Elvessie, Alice, Elizabeth, Izora age 14, Eva V. age 12, Thomas D age 12, Ora Carter 1873.   This is the last Census that Martha A the wife of Leonard is counted in she died in 1892 and is buried in Howards Cemetery.

Jeremiah Carter

Jeremiah Carter was born the 23 Jul 1826 in Kentucky and passed away 13 Dec 1908 in Hendricks County Indiana.  He is buried in Howards Cemetery. He is first counted as the head of household in the 1850 Census living in Brown Township, Hendricks, Indiana.  He is married to a Catherine G b. 3 Sep 1828 in Kentucky, possible maiden name Storts.  The 1900 Census indicates they were married in 1845. In the 1850 Census they have two children James William born 1848 and a girl Mary E born 1850. The Jeremiah Cater family has  not yet been found in  the 1860 Census.  They are in the 1870 Census still in Brown Township in Hendricks County.  Mary E is still living with her parents and so is a sister Martha born in 1852.  In the 1880 Census only a son John C Carter born in 1859 is living with the parents.  I do not know where he was in the 1870 Census.  But he is identified as a son, along with John C., a servant Izabell Todd is listed.    In the 1900 Census the household consist of Jeremiah, Catherine, John C., John's wife Minta C. Marvel and their four children Orville O age 18, Nellie age 15, Zeph age 9, and Russel age 6.   Jeremiah's death is recorded in the Indiana Death as dying in Brown Township in Hendricks.  Catherine G Storts? is living with her son John's family in the 1910 Census, she passes on 15 Jun 1918.

Jeremiah "Jerry" Carter and his wife Catherine Storts Carter share a square topped light grey granite stone.  The name Carter is surrounded by ornate scroll carvings

Samuel Howard and Elizabeth Henderson

Samuel Howard was born in Kentucky on 13 May 1818 and passed away on 8 May 1900.  He was married to Elizabeth Henderson before 1851.  He is living with his wife and two daughters Ellen born 1851 and Alice J born 1853 in Lewis Kentucky in 1860. At some time between 1853 and the 1860 Census the Samuel Howard family immigrates to Perry Township Boone County Indiana.  In the 1870 Census he list his occupation as farmer, with his wife Elizabeth keeping house, both daughters are at home.   His daughter Ellen marries Silas Funkhouser on 26 Feb 1871 and they start their own family in Perry Township Boone County and are listed in the 1880 Census.  Alice J., the youngest daughter of Samuel's is living with her father in the 1880 Census. Samuel is listed as being a widower and his occupation is that of farmer.  We can surmise that Elizabeth died between 1870 and 1880.  Her burial is at this time unknown.(Notation we will look for her grave in Howards, during probing)The household also includes one boarder a Daniel Comisky, he lists his occupation as farmer.   In 1882 Alice J. Howard marries Daniel Comisky.  It is on their marriage index that we find the maiden name of Alice's mother.

A connection between John B Howard and Samuel of this sketch has not yet been established.  The only linking information is that they are both born in Kentucky, move to the southern part of Boone County, and are both buried in Howards Cemetery.  If a connection is uncovered it will be posted here on the Blog

Emma Funkhouser Howard

Emma was a new young bride, when she passed on 15 Apr 1873.  She had been married to Truviller Howard the son of John B Howard.  Emma and her groom Truviller(T.E.) were married on the 25 Dec 1872, they were only married for three and a half months before she passed away.  Emma was the daughter of Gideon Funkhouser born in Aug 1828 in Virginia who passed in 1913 and his wife Mary Ann Slagel(Slagle Name variant) born Oct 1835 in Virginia and passed in 1917.  Emma parents were married in Boone County Indiana 8 Dec 1853.  They are both buried in Howards Cemetery.

John B Howard

John B. Howard was born about 1810 in Kentucky.  He first appears as living in Boone County in the 1840 Census.  The Census records indicate that he has two male children between 5-9 living with him.  He also has two female children under the age of five in the household.  The 1840 Census also puts his age between 20-29 and a female in the same age range.  There is a total of six free persons in the household.
In the 1850 Census we have a better view of the family.  The household in 1850 consist of John B. Howard age 41 born in Kentucky, Lydia Howard age 39 born in Kentucky, Dudly Howard age 18 born in Kentucky, Ellen age 14 born in Indiana, Elizabeth age 12  born in Indiana, America Howard age 10 born in Indiana, Lovina(Luvina) age 8 born in Indiana, Caroline Howard age 6 born in Indiana, Terhiller(Truviller) Howard 4 born in Indiana, and Israel Howard 2 born in Indiana.  (As state in the earlier post this may or may not be the Israel buried in Howards.) We shall see.   We can surmise that the family moved to Boone County between 1832-1836 as Ellen is born in 1836 in Indiana and older brother Dudley is born in 1832 in Kentucky

The family is still living in Boone County in the 1860 Census, two additional daughters have been born Jemina who is 9 and Chloe who is 5.  This is not the same Chloe that is born in 1877 and dies the same year, as the Chloe is living with her mother in the 1880 Census.   The last Census that John B. Howard is counted in is the 1870 Census he is listed as being a Farmer.  Lydia, T.E.  Chloe and an Alonzo Hollingsworth make up the household.

In the 1880 Census the household is made up of Lydia Howard, Chloe Howard and James B. Doyal.  This is the last Census that Lydia will be counted in as she passes in 1883.  The Howard children marry into various Perry Township families, such as the Crane, Smith and Crabb to name a few.

Howards Cemetery Interned Genealogy

Have been researching the Genealogy of the interned in Howards Cemetery.  The sign at Howards gives the established date as 1886, but the first burial  is that of Israel D. Howard born in 1839 and he died on Aug 7, 1841. But this recorded date maybe wrong and with our excavation we will determine, the correct death date; as the Census records indicate that in 1850 Israel is two years of age and living with his parents. It could be a possibility that there could be two Israels, but no Israel is shown living with the family in the 1860 Census. The original Cemetery records either never existed or have been lost to time. Israel was the son of John B. Howard b. 9 Oct 1809 d. 31 Jul 1870 and his wife Lydia 23 Nov 1812 d. 6 Nov 1883, they are also buried in Howards.  Israel's brothers Alonzo b.1829 d. 18 Sep 1848, and Dudley b. 1843 d. 8 Aug 1851.  are both buried in Howards.    There is also a Chloe, Emma and Samuel Howard that are buried in Howards, but have not been identified as being part of the John B. Howard family.
