Leonard (Lenard) Carter was born in Kentucky 18 May 1822 and passed away in Hendricks County Indiana 4 May 1916. He was united in marriage to a Martha A. Stuart(maiden name found on sons Ora's Marriage Index) born 12 Dec 1830 in Kentucky and passed away 20 Sep 1892 in Indiana. The family immigrated to Indiana between 1852 and 1855, as their son John T Carter was born in Indiana in 1855 he died 16 Sep 1887. Prior to that they had daughter Margaret born in 1852 in Kentucky. The family is first counted as living in Indiana in the 1860 Census living in Perry, Boone, Indiana. (Research Note they are living next door to the Jeremiah Carter Family) The household consists of Leonard age 37 , Martha age 28, James D age 12, Catherine age 10, Margaret age 8, John T age 5, Elvessie age 3, Alice A. age 1 The family is counted in the 1870 Census living in Brown, Hendricks, Indiana. The household consisted of Lenard age 48, Martha age 40, James age 22, Margaret age 18, John 15, Silvester age 12(researcher note believe Elvessia and the identified Silvester are the same person,despite the spelling difference), Alice age 11, Elizabeth age 8, Clara age 6, Thomas age 3 and Victoria age 3 mos. They are then counted in the 1880 Census Lenard, Martha, Elvessie, Alice, Elizabeth, Izora age 14, Eva V. age 12, Thomas D age 12, Ora Carter 1873. This is the last Census that Martha A the wife of Leonard is counted in she died in 1892 and is buried in Howards Cemetery.
